National Geographic Channel Naked Science: Bermuda Triangle
Several possible reasons for the Triangle's reputation as a danger zone are investigated. Scientists have discovered that the area's magnetic field has dropped considerably in the last 20 years. Could activity involving underwater volcanic vents be affecting the field and posing a threat to vessels? UFO's, as well as bizarre weather conditions, are also considered as possible explanations.

National Geographic Channel Naked Science: Birth of the Earth
Naked Science examines evidence that has survived over 4 billion years to answer questions that have plagued scientists and philosophers alike, such as: why we are here, what caused our planet to come to existence, what caused the diversity of life and natural spectacles available on this pristine ecosystem we call earth, and what exactly does it take to support human life. Via direct and indirect evidence and interviews with many of the best minds of science, Naked Science aims to not only answer these questions, but answer the questions that drive the human spirit.

National Geographic Channel Naked Science: Angry Skies
National Geographic Channel Naked Science: Angry Skies
Some of the worst nature can offer is spawned from the skies above. Though their damage is concentrated, a tornado's strong winds can turn debris into deadly missiles. With hurricanes, a huge amount of energy is discharged over hundreds of miles causing widespread devastation. What are the precautions can we take to protect ourselves?

National Geographic Channel Naked Science: Atlantis
National Geographic Channel Naked Science: Atlantis
Plato wrote 40,000 words describing Atlantis in specific detail. His description forms the criteria which is used to evaluate four sites that some claim could have been Atlantis. The city had concentric circles of land and water, was made of red, black and white rocks, its people sacrificed bulls, elephants grazed, and it was destroyed by a
catastrophe about 9000 B.C.
The island of Malta has intriguing temple ruins that date back to 3600 B.C. There is evidence of bull sacrifices having been made there. Elephants could have existed, having migrated there before ocean levels rose and Malta was still connected to the mainland. There is soil evidence of an ancient flood, perhaps a tsunami, striking the island. On the negative side, the rocks are all brown, there no evidence of circular waterways, and the temples don't date back far enough.
Offshore of the Bahama Islands lies a collection of unusual white rectangular rocks known as the Bimini Highway. Some are sure they're the work of an ancient civilization. Scientists, however, aren't convinced they're not simply natural rock formations. Plus, there's no evidence of canals, bulls, elephants or colored stones. This is an unlikely choice.
Off of Cuba under 2000 feet of water lies eight square miles of huge stones that appear to be shaped like temples found in ancient Mayan cities. If they are man-made, it would have taken a major catastrophe to put them down there. But there's no evidence of colored rocks, no bulls or elephants, no circular waterways and no indication of the time it happened.
The leading contender to have actually have been Atlantis is the Greek island of Santorini. Studying city remains shows that a catastrophe did wipe out the city and part of the once-circular island. A volcano erupted there with 90-times the power of Mt. St. Helens. While there is no evidence of elephants having lived there, frescos have been found depicting bulls. But what about the time frame? The explosion was only 1300 years before Plato but some experts say the writer could have meant 900 years as opposed to 9000 years.

National Geographic - Africa Sahara
National Geographic - Africa Sahara
On February 20, Charlie, Ray and Kevin touched the Red Sea, just a few hours before sunset. Their quest had lasted 111 days and taken them through 6 countries: Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, and Egypt. By the team's daily GPS record, they had traveled over 4,300 miles (6,920 kilometers). They fought through injury and extreme fatigue to reach their goal, which changed them forever.

National Geographic Channel Naked Science: Angry Earth
National Geographic Channel Naked Science: Angry Earth
Earthquakes are caused by the movement of plates beneath the surface of the earth. As the plates push past each other, energy builds up until its released as an earthquake.
The most powerful earthquake ever recorded struck Chile in 1960, but caused minimal damage and loss of life. If it had occurred in a highly populated area, the losses would have been astronomical.
The most powerful quake to hit the US was 9.2 near Anchorage, Alaska in 1964. Traveling over a 2000 mile fault line, the quake lasted 7 minutes. The now-abandoned town of Valdez, built on soil of sand and gravel, was totally destroyed. Where the soil is loose and moist, like in Valdez, an earthquake causes the land to behave like quicksand. The effect is known as liquefaction. Two former residents recall the day that quake happened. The entire waterfront was pulled into the sea. The site was abandoned, with the present-day Vandez built miles away on safer land. Many major cities face the same liquefaction danger, including Los Angeles and San Francisco. Both cities are situated along the active San Andreas fault, which shows movement of about two inches per year.
Why do some buildings collapse and others remain standing? Sometimes it determined by the frequency of the quake. Every building has a specific frequency, so when the quake and the building's frequency match, the building is often destroyed.
In 1994, a 6.7 quake struck Los Angeles. The efforts of firefighters to save a man trapped in his car during a parking lot collapse are dramatized.
Earthquakes are also the cause of tsunamis. Small tsunamis are common, but occasionally waves have been known to exceed 200 feet when crashing onto shore. Tsunamis can happen at any time.
Serious efforts to predict earthquakes began in the 1970s, but no one has had repeatable success at predicting them.
However, one scientist at UCLA, using a complex formula he's been tweaking with for twenty years, is actually having some success. Could he be on to something?

National Geographic - Brain Diggers
National Geographic - Brain Diggers
A construction worker is clearing a path through a Florida bog known as the Windover pond when his digger unearths something macabre: a human skull. The preservation of the skull suggests someone who died just years ago but when carbon dating results return the archaeological world is stunned. The skull belonged to someone over 7000 years old - twice as old as the pyramids.
"Unique" is not a word any writer should use lightly; and truly "unique" archaeological sites are few and far between. I don\'t mean the oldest sites or the sites with the most golden artifacts, I mean the the kind of sites that the more you learn about them, the more startling and fascinating they become. The Early Middle Archaic Windover Bog site, a pond cemetery on Florida's Atlantic coast near Cape Canaveral, is just one of those sites.
Windover Bog was a pond cemetery for hunter-gatherers, people who lived hunting game and gathering vegetable material between about 8120-6990 years ago. The burials were staked down in the soft mud of the pond, and over the years at least 168 people were buried there, men, women, and children. Today that pond is a peat bog, and, as you probably know, preservation in peat bogs can be quite astonishing. While the burials at Windover were not as well preserved as those of European bog bodies, 91 of the individuals buried contained bits of brain matter still intact enough for scientists to retrieve DNA.
Most interesting, however, is the recovery of 87 samples of weaving, basketry, wood working and clothing, providing us more information on the perishable artifacts of Middle Archaic people in the American southeast than archaeologists ever dreamed possible. Four kinds of close twining, one kind of open twining, and one type of plaiting can be seen in the mats, bags, and basketry recovered from the site. Clothing woven by the inhabitants of Windover Bog on looms included hoods and burial shrouds, as well as some fitted clothing and many rectangular or squarish clothing articles.
All evidence was suggesting this ancient tribe were caring, compassionate and peaceful yet they were about to make another shocking discovery that hinted at something darker: one skeleton had been the victim of a gruesome decapitation. Now archaeologist Glen Doran is applying cutting edge science to solve this riddle of the dead.

Mysteries of Mankind
Mysteries of Mankind
Actor Richard Kiley narrates this investigation into both new and well-known clues to the origins of the human race. Razor -sharp tools of our ancestors are examined and discussed by historians and experts. A number of fossilized skeletons that are more than a million years old are examined by scientists. Ash-entombed footprints provide a trail into centuries that ended long ago. Viewers will see many artifacts that all relate to what is often referred to as one of the "greatest mysteries of all time."
